The eggs under our broody Buckeye hen (see Building A Broody Box) were due to hatch starting yesterday (Tuesday) when it would have been 20 days since we set eggs under her; so we were shocked on Saturday when this showed up:
Naturally, we then expected more eggs would be hatching shortly - but nothing on Sunday, or Monday, or even Tuesday. We almost gave up. Then today, another chick finally showed up (it’s under her left shoulder):
And, a little while later, it looks like there are two more under there:
We’re waiting on the final count, but it appears that she’ll hatch a small clutch this time – it’s the first time around for everyone involved and we’re all learning. I’m thrilled that any hatched – we have peeps again; and a mama hen willing to raise them too.
On top of that, the second Buckeye hen to go broody (see Candling Broodies Eggs) has been patiently waiting for her turn in the broody box. We plan to set eggs under her too in a few days, and see if we can’t get a couple of hens in the flock that are good mothers.

my buckeye broody hen just hatched 12 eggs! all are doing well, which is very cool, i took 6 away from her, thought 12 was a lot to take care of, and she is an amazing mom. where is clinton ohio? i live in clermont county, which is just a little due east of cincinnati.
Wow! I didn’t know they would go broody and hatch eggs that late in the season – and 12 of them is fantastic – she is a great mom. Clinton is a little south and west of Akron, north and east from you.
Congratulations! That’s awesome!
How many peeps do you have now?
We have four peeps, and they’re cute as can be. I thought they were cute when we were raising the day-old chicks, but they’re even cuter with mama hen raising them. And, Broody Number 2 is in the broody box with 8 eggs too………..
Awesome. Congratulations!
Awesome! We purchased Buckeye’s and have enjoyed them so much. I did read somewhere, that the hens will have black markings on their heads, and the roosters will not. Your photo looks like a Rooster. What have you learned? I looked back at my photos of the little fluff balls, and it worked out that way. I had 4 girls and 2 boys.
Glad to see they go broody. I would prefer they do the work, the natural way.
