The propane torch shown below is the best $29.99 I’ve ever spent for weeding (I found it at Harbor Freight) - it’s awesome what I was able to accomplish in very little time.
This is what it looked like as I started using it to remove the weeks on the bank above our new rock wall (see Bramblestone Wall).
And this is what the bank looked like less than an hour later – weeds eradicated! It would have been difficult and time-consuming to do this using other methods.
After torching, we were able to immediately plant with Ivy to start getting a ground cover established. We got the torch with the electric ignition for easier lighting (they also have one for $10.00 less without the igniter). With the unit we got, the gas has to be turned down very low to get it to light, but once you get the hang of that, it’s super easy to use.
I think this is just fantastic, I can use it in the garden, in the flower beds – everywhere there are weeds! It’ll save so much time, it helps avoid using chemicals, and torched seeds in the upper soil layer aren’t going to germinate anymore. It’s the best thing since sliced bread for weeding!

Is that a hose in your picture? It only burns where you used it?
I ask because while I would love to use that, we have to be very careful how we burn around our 120 year old retirement house.
This is really a great idea though. I like it!
LindaG, that is a hose in the picture – I wanted water available because you are using flames, so it’s potentially dangerous. However, it only burned where I used it, and I don’t feel like it would get out of control easily. I think it’s a great tool, but I also think you need to be mindful of what you’re doing whenever using it.
LOL! We do this also! We live on 5 acres in the country and our neighbors down the street saw us doing this last fall and came over to ask if they could borrow it. LOL! They even refilled the propane tank when they were done. =)
It’s looking great! Can’t wait to see what else you have planned!
