For years, I’ve been very careful to consider what we’re eating, and have been trying to exclude many of the potentially harmful substances that have crept into our food supply. That’s why we have our own chickens, goats, honey bees, and gardens. But, it was only recently that I really began to consider how large an organ our skin is, and how important it is to also consider what we’re applying to it too.
When I really began to look at what’s contained in many of the soaps, shampoos, lotions, and deodorants that are on store shelves (yikes), I decided it was time to start making our own, using the real ingredients that we’re already producing on the farm (goat milk, honey, beeswax, etc.). So, I was excited when my friend Jess (blog writer at The 104 Homestead) asked if I’d review her new book for her, because that’s what it’s all about – making wholesome beauty essentials at home!
Homemade Beauty Essentials is a digital book (you can get it in either PDF or eReader format) that I really enjoy because it provides solid information on how to easily produce hard lotion bars, melt and pour soaps, and lip balms. It tells you what supplies you’ll need, describes the different ingredients that go into the recipes, gives suggestions on where to obtain them, and gives simple to understand instructions (and some good tips) on how to produce them.
The book includes recipes for 6 different lotion bars, 6 melt and pour soaps, and 3 lip balms; as well as pictures of how the final products will look (see above for a lotion bar photo example). It also includes descriptions of essential oils you might want to include, their benefits, and cautions that may pertain to their use. I tried recipes for a lotion bar and lip balm, and they turned out beautifully. The photo below is one of my lotion bars, I used a fancy mold – did I mention we have honey bees?
So, if you’re interested in getting started on making your own homemade beauty products, I highly recommend this book as a great way to successfully get started. You can buy the book from Jess’s store 104 Homemades or, if you’d like to try some of her homemade beauty essential products without the work, you can also buy them directly from her store.
And, just for fun, Jess has agreed to let me give away a free copy of Homemade Beauty Essentials. Use the form below to enter.
