The Buckeyes Are Laying!

27 Week Buckeyes

The Buckeyes are 27 weeks old today; and a couple of the 14 hens have begun laying.  The eggs seem so tiny compared to the Red Comet eggs (at an average of 2 1/4 ounces); however, they weigh in at 1 3/8 ounces, slightly larger than the weight of the Comets first eggs (they were 1 1/4 ounce).

It’s been a great journey with these birds – from the little tiny day-old hatchlings, to the growing pullets and cockerels, and finally the fully grown hens and roosters.  It’s so exciting to finally have the flock all in the coop and laying.  They’ve matured into wonderful birds for the backyard; friendly, inquisitive, and just great to have around.  [...]

Raising Buckeye Chicks

43D

The Buckeye chicks are 21 weeks old now; and are starting to look like real chickens.  We ordered 25 day-old chicks, received 30, lost two within the first three days; and the remaining 28 prospered.  I wrote about how we intended to raise them when they first arrived (see Raising Day-Old Chicks); but we learned a few things along the way.

Buckeyes Leave The Brooder

Buckeyes In Stall 7

The Buckeyes turned five weeks old today, and left the brooder for the big world of the barn stall.

These Buckeyes seem much more inquisitive than the Red Comets we just raised, they act like they own the world.

When we opened up the brooder, I just sat back with the camera and snapped pictures – it took them all of about 5 seconds to start exploring, and checking me out too.  They seem pretty fearless.

Now when I open the barn stall to go in, these guys run toward me – not away.  And they chase me all [...]

The Goats Are Here

Lesa, Tinkerbell, and Honey

We’ve had two Dwarf Nigerian goats picked out for quite awhile, but couldn’t bring them home because we were waiting on the fencing guys.  Today we finally picked them up.  Here’s “Bit “O” Honey”, she’s already won 1st place at a show:

And also her cousin (mother’s are sisters) “Tinkerbell”, standing in front of Honey:

Why goats?  Well, these are purebred Dwarf Nigerian goats, which are true dairy goats – just smaller.   We have an abundance of poison ivy, multi-flora rose, etc. which goats love to eat; so, we hope they’ll help keep the farm cleared, and provide us with milk.  Their smaller size appeals to me (these two are [...]
