Drying Lavender

Lavendar Blooming

The lavender is blooming now, so it’s time to start drying it – I love having it around for sachets and crafts.  It’s well known for its insect repellant properties and we love the fragrance.

There’s really nothing difficult about drying lavender - simply gather the flowering stems just as the flowers start to open and hang in small bunches to dry.  When cutting the stems, be sure to leave a few inches of green growth on the plant – don’t go all the way down to the woody portion of the stem.  When you’ve cut enough blossoms to fill your hand, wrap a rubber band [...]

Fall Garden Cleanup

Fall Garden

Right now, it’s very important to focus energy on cleaning up the vegetable garden.   I wish that all my cleanup chores were done; but I’m still working on it because I know a few hours of work now will make a huge difference in next year’s garden. 

It’s most important to remove and destroy (not compost) all the remains from this year’s vegetable plants because many vegetable pests survive from year to year on old plant debris.  This will help prevent insect and disease problems from starting next spring and summer.
