Many chicken-keepers are avid gardeners, so we want to feed our chickens the excess garden greens. But then, we stop and wonder whether the plants are really good for them. Or, might they be health hazards? And, are all the parts of the plants good for them, or should some parts be avoided? In the not-so-distant past, feeding the flock from the garden was taken for granted. But today, most chicken owners feed their flocks commercially mixed and bagged feed. These premixed and balanced rations ... continue reading...
Easy Homemade Glass Cleaner
I wanted to find an easy, non-toxic homemade glass cleaner that would work just as well as the commercial version. And, be so inexpensive that you'd be crazy to go pay $5.50 for it (that's what a bottle of Windex® was going for at the store). What's In Easy, Homemade Glass Cleaner? Homemade glass cleaner recipes generally start with vinegar and water, and then add alcohol and/or cornstarch. I know, cornstarch? But, having tried recipes of vinegar/water, vinegar/water/alcohol, and ... continue reading...
Bramblestone Peach Tea
Peach Tea (aka Peachy)Â is the granddaughter of 3*M Old Mountain Farm Hot Tea 3*DÂ (LA 05-04 90 EEEV) and the daughter of 4*M Bramblestone Sun Tea 4*D (LA 04-03 87 +EEE) - two does that I really love many things about. But, they had a couple of conformational weaknesses that held them back from getting the highest linear appraisal scores and doing terrific in the show ring. As breeders of Nigerian Dwarf goats, we're continually trying to improve the breed. So, we were very happy to observe ... continue reading...
Old Mountain Farm SisLee
SisLee came to Bramblestone Farm from Old Mountain Farm in the fall of 2018. She came with her son StagLee and is the daughter of an Old Mountain Farm doe that I've admired for a long time - 2*M SG NC Promisedland Nemesis 2*D (LA 09-01 90 VEEE). Old Mountain Farm SisLee is a conformationally beautiful, fine-boned doe with a well-attached udder. Despite her delicate look, she is also the loudest doe (when she wants to be) we ever had at Bramblestone Farm. In addition to her great ... continue reading...
Bramblestone Ostara Quinn
Bramblestone Cal Ostara Quinn (aka Tara) is the polled daughter of 5*M Old Mountain Farm Taylor Quinn *D and Dragonfly HLJ Calvary *S. So, she has fantastic Old Mountain Farm and Dragonfly bloodlines. The photo above is of Tara as a second freshener, and you can see how much more capacious she is as a second freshener than as a first freshener when comparing her pictures below. She should have no problems getting her milking star(s) to become a 6th generation star milker. Her dam ... continue reading...
Chicken Feed Nutritional Labels Explained
Chicken (or poultry) feed nutritional labels can be somewhat confusing, but poultry feed manufacturers carefully formulate their rations to help us chicken-keepers get excellent results when using them (see How To Feed Your Chickens). They do this by segregating chicken feeds into those that are appropriate for meat or dual-purpose and egg-laying breeds (broiler or layer rations). Then they further categorize them into nutritionally complete feeds for day-old chicks, growing chicks, or adult ... continue reading...
Creating Beautiful Container Plantings (thrillers, fillers, & spillers)
Creating beautiful container plantings is easy if you understand the concept of using thrillers, fillers, and spillers. I'm not sure my container plantings are always gorgeous, but they usually turn out pretty nice because years ago I learned to use at least one "thriller", "filler", and "spiller" when planting the container. And if you've got room, throw in a "chiller" to make it exciting. I read about the concept long ago, but every year as I'm picking out plants for containers, it ... continue reading...
Easy Cucumber, Onion, & Dill Salad (keto-friendly too!)
This easy cucumber, onion, & dill salad is practically a staple in our refrigerator when we have cucumbers and onions coming out of the garden. Although it's quite simple, it's very refreshing and tastes like a "new pickle" to me. I originally found this recipe in a cookbook by the "Frugal Gourmet", Jeff Smith. Since we've been doing a "keto" type diet, we were also excited to learn that Swerve can be substituted for the sugar to make a "keto-friendly" version of this salad. What Goes ... continue reading...
