“Lost On Hope Island” is a tale about two children cast away on a deserted island. It’s written by Patricia Harman and is intended for youngsters ages 7 -12. It’s a suspenseful story of how two children manage to survive on their own.
Youngsters in the target age group will love this book – because it’s all about children being resourceful and overcoming great challenges. Even though I’m way beyond the target age group, I really enjoyed reading it, and find that I don’t want to miss the sequel 🙂
One of the things I like best in the book, is the way the children learn to live with the island goats to survive. The description of the goats and their behaviors are so realistic!
In addition to the wonderful story, there are illustrations and sidebars throughout the book that describe how to actually do the survival skills that the children learn. Here’s an example of the illustration and sidebar after they learn to milk the goats:
This would be an awesome book for any youngster that loves animals, the outdoors, or has goats. It’s great as a bed time story (except that the kids won’t want you to quit reading) and would really appeal to those homesteading or learning to homestead.
Besides using the goats to survive, the ideas of self reliance and and sustainable living are integral to the story. The children learn many survival skills, including how to find, harvest, and use honey made by honey bees! So, I thought this book would be a great fit for a giveaway on Better Hens and Gardens, and Patricia graciously agreed. We’re giving away:
