Raspberries are perennials and are prolific, so they make great additions to homesteads - regardless of whether it's an urban, suburban, or rural homestead. Planting a raspberry patch is quite easy too, as long as a few important details are taken care of. Because they're perennials, it's very important to select the right kind of plant, site, and planting arrangement for your situation. With careful attention to these details, a successful raspberry patch will produce for many ... continue reading...
Refreshing Spring Salad (Endive, Orange, Arugula, Apple, Pecan, & Blue Cheese)
In late winter and early spring, our fresh salad ingredients from the garden are long gone, so it's delightful to make this recipe because these are ingredients that are tasty all year long. We first discovered this recipe during our annual goat-kidding week, when we're anxiously awaiting and then celebrating as the does give birth. The salad has such a bright, uplifting flavor - it goes well with any uplifting event! The citrusy orange, sweet apple, bitey arugula, nutty pecan, and ... continue reading...
Old Mountain Farm Springloaded
Another handsome Old Mountain Farm buck, Springloaded (aka Springer) joined Bramblestone Farm in the summer of 2016. As usual with the OMF goats, he brings exciting genetics to our herd. And good looks too - he is so handsome! Springer's dam, Old Mountain Farm Parti Favah scored 90 VEEEÂ for her permanent excellent linear appraisal score. She's a gorgeous doe and has obviously passed her beauty down to her son. Springer's sire, Old Mountain Farm Darius Quinn is littermate brother to ... continue reading...
Clipping Goats
It's a good idea to clip goats in springtime - it gets rid of the excess hair before summer's hot weather, makes the goat a "bad" place for lice to hangout, and gives them a nice neat appearance (so everyone can see what the goat really looks like). But, the goats don't necessarily appreciate the clipping process, so we use the milking stand to hold them while clipping. We generally clip adults in spring after the weather has warmed up in the daytime to the 60's, but might not clip any ... continue reading...
Definition of a Pullet
It's time for raising "day-old" chicks again this year, and it always reminds me of the time we ordered "pullets" from the feed store in Amish territory and expected to pick up young hens - instead we picked up day-old peeps! The definition for a pullet from the dictionary is: a young hen; specifically : a hen of the domestic chicken less than a year old. So I guess that leaves it pretty much wide open. When we think of a pullet, we think of a female chicken that's just old ... continue reading...
Attracting Beneficial Wildlife to Your Garden
You already know about the plethora of beneficial insects that can help rid your garden of pests, but did youknow there are a number of beasties out there that do the same? Birds, frogs, toads, lizards, and snakes are all more than happy to eat the nasty insects that make mince-meat of your plants. What’s more, all you have to do to attract them is provide a little shelter and water — although each creature has slightly different needs. Birds You’ll want to offer two types of shelter to ... continue reading...
Champagne Brunch Eggs
I've lost the source of this recipe - but really like it because it can be assembled the night before, baked in the morning, tastes great, and serves a crowd. The edges of this batch got a little crispy, but it's still so tasty..... This combination of spices, swiss cheese, and ham always seems to turn out so well, and everyone seems to enjoy the flavor. Perhaps it is the champagne or white wine that makes it taste so special! Whatever the source of its great flavor, ... continue reading...
New Electric Farm Utility Vehicle
This Easter, in addition to new goat kids, we traded in our old electric farm utility vehicle and upgraded to a new model. We got the old vehicle in 2010 as a used vehicle, and although it's worked well as a farm utility vehicle, it had a couple of drawbacks. It had low clearance and was not the peppiest of vehicles, so it sometimes had a hard time making it up the slope from our lower pasture area to the house (particularly in snow or ice). So, the new cart has much higher clearance and ... continue reading...
