Every year it seems that there's an overload of tomatoes in the fall, so I make and freeze this sauce to use up all those wonderful tomatoes. If you're making it with fresh ingredients from the garden, it has great flavor and can be used in so many ways throughout the winter months. Besides the tomatoes, we usually have everything else that goes into it ripening in the garden too, so making it is convenient. Things like chili, spaghetti sauce, pizza, tomato based casseroles, etc. all ... continue reading...
Herbed Eggs
In the summertime, when both herbs and eggs are plentiful, this is one of our favorite week-end breakfast dishes. You can use whatever herbs (and quantities of herbs) that are your favorite, but fresh farm eggs and herbs really make this dish fantastic. The ingredients are simple, but the combination is delicious. This dish is adapted from a recipe in Barefoot Contessa In Paris by Ina Garten. It serves 2, but the recipe can easily be multiplied to serve ... continue reading...
Blooms for Bees
One of every three bites we eat is made possible by bees. Without their pollination of plants, there would be a lot of foods we've grown dependent upon that wouldn't be available. So, it's important to support our honey bees by providing them with abundant food sources. We can do that by planting flowers that provide blooms that are good sources of food for them (as identified in the lists below), and make sure that we have plants that they like blooming throughout all the temperate ... continue reading...
*B Bramblestone Mighty Quinn
*B Bramblestone Mighty Quinn is the second buckling born at Bramblestone Farm that we decided to retain. He's the son of the only buck (Old Mountain Farm Field Mouse) and doe (5*M Old Mountain Farm Taylor Quinn) that we brought home directly from Old Mountain Farm. So, not only does he have a terrific Old Mountain Farm pedigree, he's a special guy too. We took him to his first show in 2016, and he was Champion Junior Buck in both rings. Mighty is also polled! In 2017, Mighty Quinn ... continue reading...
*B Bramblestone Midnight Mouse
*B Bramblestone Midnight Mouse is the son of the first buck (Old Mountain Farm Field Mouse) and doe (5*M Old Mountain Farm Taylor Quinn *D) that we brought home directly from Old Mountain Farm. We initially retained Midnight's littermate brother (*B Bramblestone Mighty Quinn) but sold Midnight to become a herdsire for a small herd in Northeast Ohio. At his new home, Midnight was not shown or linearly appraised so hasn't earned champion status yet (but I believe he would earn it quickly). ... continue reading...
Drying Lavender
The lavender is blooming now, so it's time to start drying it - I love having it around for sachets and crafts. It's well known for its insect repellant properties and we love the fragrance. There's really nothing difficult about drying lavender - simply gather the flowering stems just as the flowers start to open and hang in small bunches to dry. When cutting the stems, be sure to leave a few inches of green growth on the plant - don't go all the way down to the woody ... continue reading...
Swarm Season – Hiving Honey Bee Swarms
This is the time of year in our area that the honey bees start swarming. They've been active since spring and there has been lots of good bloom going on, so the hives have grown and some are becoming crowded. As soon as a queen notices her hive's becoming a little crowded, she'll lay some queen cells and when one hatches out, she leaves and takes part of the original hive with her in a "swarm". I was working down in our garden (which our hives surround), and noticed that one of the hives had ... continue reading...
Goat Herd Hierarchy: The Herd Queen
Every goat-herd has a defined social hierarchy (pecking order), and the number one female goat in that hierarchy is the herd queen. She’s the dominant doe in the herd, and as such, she gets first choice of food, sleeping spot, and anything else considered desirable by goats (in a dairy herd, she’ll want to be milked first). Every other doe in the herd has a specific dominant order below her, and gets access to the best items based on that position. The goats establish their ... continue reading...
